Same problem here.
Half of our linux VM won't support FLR because of random "i don't lik your partition layout".
To make things harder, you need to do this from a linux VM that has a recent flash plugin installed and is also scheduled for backup.
Isn't there an instant image based recovery?
I found a workaround anyway using NBD network filesystem.
I found vmdk images are in /mnt/dunion/, so I exported them and imported in a different machine.
I had some trouble with ext3 recovery, so i had to enable nbd copy-on-write by reimporting them.
In the end I avoided to restore a 200GB image just to recover 50MB of data.
